On-line Museums

The Internet worldwide computer network of networks provides an unparalleled opportunity for organizations ranging from individuals to multinational companies to make information rapidly and easily available on a global scale. In particular, the World Wide Web (WWW) allows access to multimedia hyperlinked resources in a form usable by the majority of people. One group of organizations that are exploring the increasing possibilities are museums. This article presents a number of museums that are using the Internet, the Virtual Library museums pages (VLmp) which provide a directory of on-line museums, and statistics on virtual museum `visits'. Finally possible future directions are explored.
